For those of us who watched Samurai Jack Episode XCVII....We were really thrown for a loop.
Oh sure we were used to the fact there would be more blood and violence on the show.
But what happened this past episode I don't think any of us expected.
First; Ashi. Apparently her black appearance was not a bodysuit or a unitard. It was in fact a crust made out of ash. We see in flashback when she was a young girl thrown naked into a pile of burning ashes as part of a perverse "baptism" in the Cult of Aku. Once the ashes formed onto her body it has been that way since. Eventually seeing the truth from Jack's point of view she washes off the ashes from her body; only to emerge naked from the pool she washed the ashes off in.
Yes; technically Ashi was naked this whole time. Only now does she wear real "clothes". (Leaves anyway.)
And naturally artists and fans can't stop thinking and talking about it.
Be wary; I think Ashi is getting pretty sick of it herself. See how she reacts here. XD
But perhaps the biggest shocker of all was the use of language on the show. Sure they said words like "Dammit", "Hell" and "S.O.B." But the one word that really turned heads was "Penis." It happened with the unexpected return of Scaramouche as his hopping disembodied head hitched a ride on a rather phallic looking creature's head. The creators of this show probably knew it looked like a penis, so they decided to bring it up anyway through Scaramouche.
"Whoa, what a freak! Looked like a talking penis!"
Yeah, what's the big deal about "Penis" being uttered on Samurai Jack anyway? Shows like 'Family Guy' use it all the time.
Well there's your answer. Samurai Jack is NOT Family Guy. It's meant to be a showcase of cinematic action and articulately crafted storytelling often considered one of the most artistic cartoons ever made. Sure it has jokes now and then; but the most daring the previous seasons did was have Jack running around naked.
I guess that also brings up another point; how come when Jack was naked no one brought it up but when Ashi was naked everyone talked about it?
One: Ashi is female and has attractive curves. Two: It came as a surprise to us. And Three: That Jack is naked episode isn't really that well embraced by fans.
With four more episodes to go; I am really looking forward to how this ultimately turns out! I am very impressed so far how they pushed the envelope!
