Steven Universe is a recent show on Cartoon network created by Rebeccas Sugar; whose experiences with Adventure Time has given her the ability to work with quirky character designs and styles.
Being among the few female creators of a show, her pilot happily garnered enough interest to get the show produced.
The idea is having a kid inheriting a Quartz stone from his mother as a means of being part of a defense team made up of other members who use the birthstones to their advantage. So far the three supporting birth stone members are Pearl, Amethyst and Garnet.
Needless to say; it didn't take long nor will it continue to take long for other fans of this show to create characters based off at the very least; their own birthstone. Unique to this show; I pretty much predict many OCs will be based off the same character name and stone. Already someone out there has created OCs based off all the stones. But regardless; if you have a certain birthstone of your own you wish fleshed out into a character like on the show; then by all means feel free to.
In this case is a character I made based off my birthstone for August; Peridot. Peridot is a dully greenish stone sometimes confused for an emerald. So the first order of business was to put in as many greens with as many shades of the color as possible. Very light green for the skin; a calm serene green for the hair, another serene light green for the dress, a darker shade for the sleeves, and olive type green for the breast plate and belt buckle upon which the Peridot stones rest.
To make an OC based off my birthstone and flesh out her personality; I had to study its background more on how its traits associated with it could help build her. According to multiple sources, the Peridot stone is attributed to success, dignity and protection. Hence the idea of making the Crystal Gem girl a vision of serenity and grace. The other girls of the show are naturally more wild at heart; though Pearl is perhaps the more perfectionist one. Which is why when they're not battling; they usually find Peridot too reserved and refined for their tastes. And indeed; she is also the same with Steven Universe.
While Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl act like big sisters to him; Peridot acts like a surrogate mother. I am trying to hint she was a close friend to his mother Rose Quartz; so much as like a sister to her. So when she disappeared to bestow her powers onto Steven, Peridot decided to step in like she was his mother and try and guide him through life. Despite the fact Steven already gets along great with his dad and the other girls; Peridot's protective nature has her trying to steer him down what she believes is the "right path."
Much to Steven's annoyance sometimes: since Peridot tries to have him cut back on fatty foods, dress nicer and improve his diction and try and change his tastes in music. She tries to impose her morals on him simply because she wants him to grow up to be a successful protector as well as a successful future man in the human world. Because Peridot is also associated with the constellation Libra; she seeks balance in his life. So while she may be a bit overbearing sometimes; she will definitely want him to have fun like any boy his age would.
Truth is she only checks in on him constantly to make sure he's doing alright. Like many mothers, she also wants Steven to be able to work things out on his own and cooperate with his fellow team mates. So if the girls argue with him or each other; she'll sometimes step in as a negotiator between the two.
Gentle, responsible and nuturing are her characteristics.
But she has a downside too. She has this idea that preserving her dignity is to preserve her beauty. She does not battle much and is obsessed with making sure her beauty isn't phased. So if she will assist the other girls in battle; she wears a jeweled mask into it.
The mask does more than protect her face. To be fully ready to fight; she fully opens her eyes. As you might've noticed her eyes are always close. If she were to open them; the flash would be too bright for all around her to bear. Despite her eyes being closed all the time she can sense her surroundings just as well as one can see through the gems on her breastplate. Bu the breastplate and her gems on it also act as her main defense.
She is a natural defender in battle. While not on the offense; the protect spells and status ailment spells she uses to assist the other girls in battle can prove beneficial. If need to go on the offense though; she has a special shield spell where she can absorb damage and convert into energy blasts. Regardless she mostly stands back as the protector for herself and the girls. (And Steven of course.) One of her shield spells can be seen i nthe concept art here on the bottom; along with the mask she wears into battle.
I think that covers most of what she's like. She will probably worked on more and this design may or may not be permanent.
I will draw her interacting with Steven as well as the other girls too sometime. Right now I thought I just should get this out there since most other fans of the show will base OCs off their own birthstones. How they choose to go further or flesh them out more is their own affair. As for me; it may sound like an overly protective mother figure wouldn't make for an exciting OC. All the more reason I need to have her interact with the characters in pieces to give you an idea of what she's really like.
