Now when you think of Nintendo; usually the first characters that come to mind are Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, etc. etc. etc.....
As such, most Nintendo games (games officially made and published by Nintendo) never go beyond a 'T' rating as their name has always been associated with kid-friendly and family oriented material.
Once in a while as of late; with the Wii having been regarded as a 'kiddie' system; Nintendo's delved more into the world of Mature gaming. Although for Microsoft and Sony that is their main market; to have their consoles almost exclusively play Adult games. So much so; that even their consoles are usually packaged with them while Nintendo's are usually packaged with age appropriate games.

So when the Gamecube was out; Nintendo tried their hand at making their first M rated game: 'Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.' To top it off, they packaged it to be unique from other M rated horror titles by including: "Video Game Insanity." Breaking the fourth wall was becoming more common place in games; having earlier been demonstrated by a gasmask wearing psycho telling the player "You like Castlevania don't you?" (In fact Silicon Knights who made Eternal Darkness also made the Metal Gear Solid remake 'Twin Snakes.')

Fourth wall breaking in Eternal Darkness included telling players their memory card was corrupted, the volume was adjusting itself on its own, and other weird crap popping up. Some of it happened randomly while others it was programmed. This of course was the scariest part of the game. Other than that, most of the monsters you encounter here aren't really anything new you haven't seen and hacked up before. Standard zombie fare if you ask me. There are far scarier monstrosities to face in Gamecube's more successful horror title: Resident Evil 4.

Like most horror game titles that are character driven, there are beautiful ladies to be had. Our main character Alexis is actually pretty for being designed as an average girl getting lost in her lineage of insanity. However, the truly prettiest girl to me in the game was her ancestor, Ellia. Ellia was a twelfth century slave girl from Cambodia, who seemingly found her way inside an accursed temple by "accident." See what happens when you wander into strange temples when you're "bored?"

Although the game wasn't nearly as dark as you might expect from it's title; I wanted to darken it more here to symbolize Ellia getting lost in an accursed temple and looking desperate for a way out. All the while, strange glowing green eyes can be seen in the background. And if you look close, you can make out ghoulish figures with extended hands and gaping mouths following right behind her.
These are the zombies she would face in the game. Frankly most were easy to defeat. It was the 'Insanity Meter' in the game that was your biggest enemy here. And as the pic suggests; she used a short sword to deal with them. Though, she also used a blowgun, but that was much tougher.

The overall feeling is to convey a feeling of being lost in a state of confusion and dread; with eerie green lights through the darkness and weird zombies coming after you. Although the temples she explored were nicely well lit. I understand for graphical reasons that needed to be done since the Gamecube was notoriously limited graphics-wise. But if you wanted to make it scarier, IMO it should have been made darker like an accursed temple should be. So this take on it is my own; not so much the game's.

And for those who know my characters; if Mai Ling was a human, she would indeed look very much like Ellia. (There are reference pics to her online to look at.)
