Strong Minds, Strong Wills, Broken Hearts

With Valentine's Day coming up on us; it is either a day to celebrate the loves you have, and the loves you lost.
Or just another holiday to post up sexy stuff. (We'll get to that later. ;D)

For now, let us look at one of the current biggest heartbreaks in furry gaming. Now for the record I got no beef with the ending to Thieves in Time. Sure Penelope turning evil was my least favorite part of the game; but only because her motivation wasn't explained that well. I understand her situation is like that of Dr. M, where she felt a mind like hers and Bentley's was capable of so much more and getting rid of the Coopers would allow them to progress further. But there's definitely gotta be more to that. Maybe Sanzuru had a plan to reveal such a plot twist's true nature in a future installment. After all; leaving games on cliffhangers leaves fans only wanting more. Sadly, it only left Sly fans wanting more and not so much other gamers who would rather just pop in an overly realistic shooter.

But....and it's not just me...I believe that in the future...we WILL have another Sly game. Could very well be the final chapter too. And if that's the case, then the two characters in this picture I drew are perhaps going to experience the most heartfelt emotions.

The first being Bentley. Now having played Sly 1-4; I can't tell you how much I truly admire this little guy. After the tragedy that happened to him in Sly 2; he didn't let that slow him down. He used his intellect and will to overcome his handicap and actually turn it into an advantage. I think being crippled allowed him to progress further in his tinkering with technology. It led him to build a flippin' time machine for crying out loud. So Bentley is definitely not a quitter. This was also true for Penelope. While the two meeting each other for the first time was a bit of a shocker, and Penelope seemed more interested in Sly; eventually they realized how much they had in common and really hit it off.
But there were soon signs that Penelope felt Bentley and her were so much more capable than Sly and could easily change the world with their genius.
The reason Bentley didn't follow along with that is because he's also a very loyal companion and true friend. Sly and him are essentially brothers; and Bentley values his friendship and familiar ties with Sly above all else. He doesn't mind being the brains behind in the operations while Sly seemingly gets "all the glory." He and Sly share a truly strong bond. So when Penelope betrayed him, Bentley was understandably crushed. (I been there too buddy.) It took a little bit of time for him to overcome this emotional upset. But when he did he felt stronger than ever; and he had his good friends Sly and Murray there by his side to lift his spirits up. "Bros before hos!" people. ;D

But as of late, it seems Penelope is leaving clues behind for Bentley to follow. This indicates there's more to her betrayal than meets the eye; and more than likely we'll find out what it is in a future installment. I drew Bentley here reminiscing on his time spent with Penelope, and her mysterious inklings she left behind. So many mixed emotions right now. He's not sure what to make of it. I'm sure he was ready to move on; but once the one girl in his life whom he shared a very strong bond with suddenly leaves traces behind that she has unfinished business with him, one can't help but feel torn on how to feel about it. Undeniabely, Bentley is emotionally confused about all this. He is unsure how to feel about Penelope now.

But there is another character to whom the feelings she has are much more clearer; Carmelita Fox. Another character I admire; yet one I sometimes am torn on how to portray. I definitely like to portray her as a kick butt female officer of the law and a strong capable woman being able to take care of herself. However, in both her dress and mannerisms, she's still like many other women out there in that she has feelings too. She's got a cold hard exterior; but it is most definitely true that Sly was the one who managed to crack it.
The relationship between Sly and Carmelita is easily one of the best I have seen in video games; and very much the most underrated. The Sly series itself tragically doesn't get enough attention. And it's a shame because for a game featuring cartoon animals, it features some of the most genuine emotions felt in a relationship I have ever seen in a series. Theirs is a relationship I buy into; it's full of love and it's full of hate. That hate of course being they're on opposite ends of the law; and the fact that Sly screws with Carmelita a couple of times.
But truthfully, we know there's something there between the two. And it was only explore further in Sly 4 after the events of Sly 3. I find it funny people mistook Carmelita's actions in Sly 4 as 'childish' or 'immature.' Hey....people!! Try being in an actual relationship before you judge! I can tell you first hand that even when a couple is together, problems persist. Also I think it's apparent in the cut scenes that Carmelita is pretty mature; and strikes me as a woman who isn't going to do 'the deed' with you until she sees a ring....and your blood test results. ;D

The romantic relationship between Sly and Carmelita was their 'Post-Rivalry' years. It takes some time to get over what happened in the past and build your relationship up a bit more before deciding to take it further. So these two were simply taking their time and exploring their feelings for each other respectfully. Of course Sly does kiss the lovely Foxy on the cheek now and then; but it's not like it means "Let's do IT!!" The two respect one another and aren't giving into lust so easily. They just got off of years of being rivals on opposite ends of the law. They take it slow.

Sadly though; I bet Carmelita regrets that. Because she could not foresee Sly disappearing in time. And with no real means of finding him, she really has to dig harder to find him by herself. I don't know how they would go about having her play her part in a Sly sequel; but I can assure you the game would still be about Sly. If we wanted a game where you play as Carmelita as the main character, that would be a spin-off of the events that happen between Sly 4 and the potential sequel. But with the way Sly games sell; that isn't very likely. Though I'm doing a little "investigation" of my own on to how that story would play out. And being a fan, I would both simultaneously use canon as well as introduce elements to complicate the plot a bit. We fans don't like to keep things simple depending on our moods do we? XD

(An wouldn't it be a real turn of events if during or after the events of the future Sly sequel, Carmelita found out she's pregnant with Sly's baby? O.o)

So here we have Bentley and Carmelita sharing a mug of tea reminiscing on some of the most important people in their lives to mend their hearts. It's not just metaphorical, they're literally in the same room together. You see, if the relationship between Sly and Carmelita goes how we think/hope it will go...Bentley and Carmelita will technically be in-laws. I think both realize this at one point and decide to turn to each other for some emotional support. Bentley's after all the one who holds the keys to time travel, and Carmelita has the will and strength to venture to the very ends of the earth...and possibly time..to get her ringtail back.
But for now, all they can do is just reminisce on their lost loves and the people that mattered the most in their lives. Now for Carmelita, it's obviously Sly. But for Bentley, it's both Penelope and Sly. Bentley lost both a girlfriend and a brother; so he's once again burdened with some real emotional baggage.

I do plan on giving Carmelita other people she eventually teams up with to find Sly as well as provide emotional support; but I'm saving that for another time. Carmelita is a tough as nails officer, but she has a heart. When someone who gives your life purpose disappears, it isn't something you easily overcome. Sly holds a strong place in her heart; and even though she does well to hide the pain, we know it's there. And we can sympathize.

So this one goes out to the broken hearted as Valentine's Day comes up. But whatever events may come in the next Sly installment and with us to meet the rest of Sly's ancestors all I can say is 'Only Time Will Tell.' (Starts playing that stupid 'Asia' song. XD)

Bentley the turtle, Penelope the mouse, Carmelita Montoya Fox and Sly Cooper belong to Sony.
