Symphony of the Night

Part of a GA-HQ Contributor's Art Collab going on; where collaborators who help keep :icongame-art-hq: awesome are given a choice of a game they wish to draw a tribute to.

Immediately the one game I thought of which to this day remains the most influential game I ever played was 'Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.'
And this image hopefully shows you why.

The gothic atmosphere, the lore of vampires and other dreaded creatures, the awesomeness of it's main protagonist Alucard, and the amazing soundtrack! All add up to one of the finest gaming experiences I ever played. And for many people; it's style of gameplay dubbed 'Metroidvania' greatly influenced them as well.

The idea behind this tribute was to have Alucard walk to the forefront carrying his sword and shield and looking very determined. He is then surrounded by many of the game's bosses. However he doesn't seem perturbed or unsure. He strides forward with confidence, cape bellowing out from him ready to strike down the unearthly creatures.
Now for a pic this big; obviously not all of Symphony of the Night's staggering boss roster could make it on here. Some ended up on the cutting room floor; most grievously The Werewolf and Minotaur. Others not included are the Doppelganger, Lesser Demon, Scylla, Karasuman, Granfaloon, Fake Grant/Trevor/Sypha, Beelzebub and Galamoth.
Those included serve two functions. One being some of the most iconic in the game and the other serving as plot devices.
The ones serving as plot devices includes Richter Belmont, Shaft, The Succubus, Death and Dracula himself.
Others served as not only the means to collect Dracula's remains to destroy him; but as a throwback to the bosses of the very first Castlevania. That would be the huge bat (known as Darkwing Bat); the mummy Akomodan II, Frankenstein's monster, the gorgon Medusa, and Death himself.
Rounding out the cast are the more unique creatures such as the spear wielding bird-like Slogra and the blue demon Gaibon. Mythological creatures like the red feathered Hippogryph and three-headed Cerberus also add to the roster.
Inbetween Shaft and Death is also the other true vampire in the game that isn't Alucard or Dracula. Count Olrox I had to include given how the Castlevania series is noted for doing a lot of horror themed motifs involving the Lord of the Vampires....except fill their games with more vampires. I also like Count Olrox for being a true image of a vampire with his Nosferatu-like appearance.

I feel after working many days on this picture and adding the last minute details; the results came out how I wanted them and I am proud of my overall work. Perhaps what i could've done better is how I fit in Maria Renard. She is obscured somewhat behind Alucard. She is meant to be in the background symbolizing her following the enigmatic (and no doubt to her; sexy) vampire prince. But I think she came out too small; and there was no real way to fix it being obscured by the Hippogryph's wings.

Other than that; this pic I create to capture the reasons why fans love Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. A huge entire castle filled to the brim with monsters and demons while experiencing Super Metroid-style gameplay and music!! That is an experience I always loved and this long overdue tribute to my favorite game hopefully clarifies it.

Castlevania, Alucard, Richter Belmont, Maria Renard and all other Castlevania characters belongs to Konami. (though it's spirit and legacy belongs more to Mr. Igarashi)

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Review

So we're wrapping up this hectic and chaotic year of 2016. So much happened to me personally this year; it was quite life changing. From my relationship with :iconverona7881: to becoming a Staff Sergeant; 2016 was a breakneck turning point for me.
Art-wise it was as well. I think I ended up drawing more human characters this year than any year since. Also my TUFF art slowed down; I'll explain why. I also focused heavily on my rendering skills a lot. Being involved in a lot of DA Group projects and expanding my art horizons really opened up the field for me.

So here is my Art Review for 2016 in all it's chaotic glory.

01. January - Ms. X Accepts Your Challenge
 Miss X Accepts Your Challenge
What a way to kick the new year off. Draw not only a human character; but three human characters. In one of the many Art Challenges I took in the :iconfighting-games-elite: group; I drew an obscure fighting game boss named Ms. X; who really turned out to be Iori Yagami in a dress. Why? Why not? I never played the game before but decided to do the challenge anyway since 2016 was already geared up to be a year of great changes for me. Might as well start it off with something I definitely don't draw very often.

02. February - Oh how cute! Are they real?
Oh how cute! Are they real?
Now a mix of uncharted territory and familiar territory. In this case a crossover between two female Interpol officers of gaming. That being Street Fighter's Chun Li and Sly Cooper's Carmelita Fox. Chun Li being a human probably hasn't encountered many furry females before. (Save for Felicia from Darkstalkers; but I doubt those Crossover games are canon in the Street Fighter Lore.) I imagine Chun Li would find Carmelita slightly adorable at first. Particularly her most stand out features. Her pair of....ears. ;3 Chun Li of course wonders if they're real. I do too. I recently replayed Sly 2 and my girlfriend noted how Carm's ears keep disappearing. Good call. XD

03. March - Freeze Kei Wilde!
Freeze Kei Wilde!
It was a huge change for us in the furry community too. Zootopia came out with raving reviews and big box office success; ushering in a new future era of furry movies that prove to be profitable. Good news for us furs. It was especially a treat to see it for the first time in California with my bro :iconfox-mccloud:. He evendressed the part of Nick Wilde for this outing. So I decided to draw his own Kei dressed as Nick Wilde being arrested by ZPD's "Newest" recruit. Officer Malmsteen. XD I doubt her uniform is in regulations though. XD Not that either of them care. :B BTW: Zootopia came out in early March; and not a single movie this year surpassed it: animation or otherwise. It is the best movie of the year for me.

04. April - Lady Malmsteen Poster
Lady Malmsteen Poster by shinragod
This one is sad for me; and I would like to sweep it under the rug pretending it never happened. But it did. I announced back in April that the Lady Malmsteen comic would FINALLY happen in October. It...didn't. :-/ Partially because I was super busy. The other; yeah my interest in TUFF Puppy has waned considerably. And that was due to the insanity I encountered within it's fandom. This year it got particularly bad when someone dangerously obsessed over Lady Malmsteen. That must've been the breaking point because I'm still trying to revive my interest in doing this comic. Particularly when I got other ideas I'd rather be working on. I dunno when I will try again. Maybe some fan encouragement would help me greatly. And no; saying "Is the comic ready yet?" or "When will the comic be ready yet?" is NOT encouragement.

05. May - Vaporeon Hydro Pump
Vaporeon Hydro Pump
The beginning of one of my favorite projects I worked on last year. It was done for the Generation I Pokemon Tribute in the :icongame-art-hq: group. This was the first Pokemon I laid claim to; Vaporeon. The move I selected for him was Hydro Pump. Since then this drawing was joined by other Pokemon I drew for this project like Ivysaur, Zapdos, Nidoking, Onyx and Pidgeot. I also helped with the main web site of Game-Art-HQ updated the profile pages for all the Pokemon and their moves used to which all participating artists drew them. It was a great experience being involved in this tremendous project that magnifies our love for Pokemon. Generation II project is set to begin in 2017.

06. June - The Furry Women of The Law
The Furry Women of The Law
So with Zootopia having come out; it was inevitable that a crossover with Judy Hopps and other furry female officers in cartoons and video games would be made. Hence this image I made of Judy joining two other female furries of the law I know and love: Kitty Katswell and Carmelita Fox. Of course most people would assume them to be a dangerous trio working together cohesively to stop crime. I for one think that before that they would have to work out their differences first. I imagine the transition would not be a smooth one in the beginning. But over time they'd work together and find out how amazing they operate as a team. The female team dynamic wouldn't stop here though. Next month would produce another female furry team; though not on the side of the law so to swww.deviantart.com/submit/peak.

07. July - Ghost Neyla
Ghost Neyla
The same furry team created in June soon saw another recruit from another fandom: Coco Bandicoot from Crash Bandicoot. And instead of busting criminals; they are now busting ghosts. This was when the all-females Ghostbusters movie came out; to mixed and negative reception. Also during this time I had a mild interest in Ghostbusters; that soon faded away shortly thereafter. But to capitalize on the moment; I donned the Ghostbusting suits on Kitty, Coco, Judy and Carmelita. Their prime ghost target; Neyla. Only it's "Ghost Neyla." Kill another Ghostbusters related thing on the list; that Ghost Nappa Meme. We give TemFourStar too much power I say. XD But as for what resulted for this crossover it was one of my better crossover pics in years.

08. August - AllStars Toothpick and Abigail
AllStars Toothpick and Abigail Minion
Another little side project I did featuring Sly Cooper characters. If some were unlockable characters in Playstation All-Stars and had their own Minion. The Minion in this case would be a Sly Cooper OC. For this scenario I did Toothpick and :iconverona7881:'s own Abigail. I also did Rioichi Cooper with my own Jenti and Carmelita Fox with my own Sarah Brendhart. I was planning to try this as a series of commissions where people could do the same with their favorite character and OC. Only....not many people played All-Stars. So as I knew it wouldn't generate much interest; the project was scrapped shortly after Rioichi.

09. September - Queen of Summer 4 FINAL ROUND Sarah vs Lola
Queen of Summer 4 FINAL ROUND Sarah vs Lola
Before I entered Staff school and just shortly after I got back visiting my parents in California; the Queen of Summer 4th Edition just wrapped up. The two finalists were Sarah Brendhart the husky and Lola Henderson the raccoon. Two grey furred cuties competing while doing some water gymnastics in the spirit of the Summer 2016 Olympics. (Not the first Round in this contest to commemorate it.) Sarah ended up being the winner by a "fur long." The revenge pic after this what with Lola's narwhal was pretty funny I must say. XD Well with Quen of Summer 4 done; I am still awaiting the reference pic for Sarah's sculpt. It may take some time as I was super busy with Staff Sergeant school shortly after this pic was made.

10. October - Sly and Carmelita Day of the Dead
Sly and Carmelita Day of the Dead
After Staff school finished Halloween was upon us. I decided to celebrate the undead festivities Sly Cooper style. Only instead of Halloween I looked to the Day of the Dead from Mexico. (AKA Dios de Muertos) Carmelita's outfit was undoubtedly  inspired by La Muerta's from 'Book of Life.' It seemed only fitting she would wear such a festive outfit to commemorate her Spanish heritage. Sly's was also Day of the Dead inspired; but with a twist of Dr. Faclier from Princess and the Frog and James Bond's Day of the Dead mask from Spectre. One of the most elaborate outfits I have made for them. This would be the last Sly pic I would work on for a while too.

11. November - Welcome To The Netherlands
Welcome To The Netherlands
So the special moment of the year had finally arrived for me in November. The year I would go see my swetest :iconverona7881:. Love Love Love We were both very excited about this. :3 Her fursona Abigail would welcome me with open arms; along with two of her loves: Espurr and her budgie Kindje. X-3 We had a great time in the Netherlands; and it would soon be my turn to welcome her to my country. She is currently staying with me for some in America as well. We both explored our love for one another and knew for sure that life without either one of us wouldn't be the same. Our love is strong and still going strong to this day. I definitely am glad to be spending more time with my sweetest. :3

12. December - Together Forever
Together Forever
2016 was a year of celebrity passings. One of the first major ones was David Bowie. The last one to have happened was in the wake of the new Star Wars movie. Carrie Fisher died just a few days ago. And no question about it: when she passed Princess Leia type fan art popped up everywhere to commemorate her. And it looks like I was there too. If I was going to do a pic of a celebrity passing this year; it might as well have been Carrie. As Han Solo died in The Force Awakens; I made it look like Leia had passed on and reunited with him in The Force. Episode VIII is already finished so it looks like she will still be Princess Leia in that movie. We have no idea how she will be written in Episode IX. Will they get a stand-in to replace or kill her off? Who knows? all we do know is she will be sorely missed. Not just because of her role as Princess Leia; but also because of her humor and brutal honesty. Farewell Ms. Fisher.

And that wraps up this year of art.
I can only hope 2017 will produce even better pieces.

Might as well make this whole Pear Thing "Pear"able. :B

Floating sentient pairs with teeth can be bad news. Particularly if they come across beautiful women. Then they turn up the perv dial and put their giant choppers to good use.

My own Mai Ling has just been pwned by the pear by taking away her dignity and biting off the back portion of her quinpo.
Ooohhh...."PEARTALITY". That isn't even a pun; just thought I'd throw a Mortal Kombat reference in there for no particular reason other than I couldn't think of a title for this.

I have a feeling this pear is going to be canned soon enough. What's with all these creatures trying to see Mai's ass? :B

25 Essential Expressions Sarah Brendhart

Based of this 25 Expressions MEME:
25 Essential Expressions by napalmnacey
I admit, I had this Expressions MEME chart shelved for well over a year! Mostly because I wanted to shade this and felt like I could have drawn this expressions a bit better. Some turned out better than others.

Among my favorites of Sarah's expressions here: PLEASED, CONFUSED, WTF?!, SERIOUS, CONFIDENT, DRUNK, DISGUSTED and (perhaps the cutest) ILL/NAUSEOUS. (Even her fur color is dulled a bit to make her look sick.)

I guess if anything this could be a template to borrow the many expressions for this character from. Expressions to build off of now that my style keeps improving.

Sarah is both comedy and drama rolled into one being Carmelita's new and eager partner. When I drew this; I envisioned her as the clumsy but loveable character who Carmelita will groom and tolerate more over time a mentor.
However....upon seeing The Lego Batman Movie recently...I might actually make Sarah bit more competent and surprisingly good at her job when Carmelita gives her an order. She was starting down this route when I first saw Judy Hopps trying to prove herself in Zootopia.
But Robin's role in The Lego Batman Movie is definitely the one that had me thinking differently. Somewhat annoying and enthusiastic but also incredibly competent to where even Batman is impressed. That is something to definitely take note of!

Plus the story she is in has a lot more complex narratives and characters to go through. So wasting my time trying to make Sarah evolve from clumsy to competent isn't all that necessary.

But one thing is for sure; her cute and sometimes childish persona hasn't gone anyway. That definitely stays because as an anthropomorphic dog; she acts like a real dog too. As indicated by this previous pic I did of her sniffing the ground:
Sarah Brendhart Skills Chart by shinragod

I wanted Sarah to be Carmelita's opposite in personality; but not in competence. Having Sarah surprise Ms. Fox and have her reluctantly accept her not only speeds things up but develops their bond quicker and makes for a good dynamic.

So I will refer to this Expressions chart again when I want to draw Sarah and her many moods in my more recent and updated style.
Hope the charisma shown here has endeared some of you to her a bit more too; especially with what i have planned for her. ;D

So Samurai Jack Has Ended

Top Ten Samurai Jack Characters

$
0
0
With Samurai Jack now over, I took a brief moment to reflect on both Season 5 and the previous seasons of Samurai Jack Seasons 1-4.

To which I compiled a listing of ten of the most memorable and favorite characters of mine.
These characters range from "One Time Only" to "Occasional Returns" to "One of the Main Characters."

You'll notice right off the bat that the main characters are in the top rung of the list; while near the bottom rung are characters that appeared only once or a few times.

Each character I selected has a reason for being in the spot I ranked them. And I shall go over each one individually right now and explain why I chose them to be on this list; and why they ranked at that certain number.

#10. - The Guardian: Appearing in the surreal and ambient episode 'Jack and the Creatures' from Season 3; this Morpheus inspired blue faced character was one of the few people other than Aku to give Jack a real hard time. Armed to the teeth with almost every weapon imaginable; his colossal strength and combat prowess proved too much even for Jack to handle. He ranks 10 on this list for being the one non-Aku or Aku-allied opponent that overwhelmed the great Samurai. But he ranks at the bottom of this list for making one of the worst calls in the series. His reason for not allowing Samurai Jack to use the time portal was that "He couldn't use it yet." Well why? Would we eventually get an answer?
Evidently not. Because in the ninth episode of Season 5; we see not only was the time portal destroyed (presumably by Aku), but so was the Guardian. Fans hoped he would return like so many of the cameos made by past memorable Jack characters. But the only thing we got were his shattered styling specs.
........Again, why couldn't Jack use it "yet?"

#9. - The Clenches: While technically two people; I put them together as the married couple who can't get along but work together to capture their quarry. Appearing in the western inspired episode that premiered prior to the amazing 'Jack and the Zombies' episode; the Clenches were a pair so polar opposite in looks and fighting you couldn't help but wonder how they even met to begin with. You have the tall muppet-looking Zeke Clench who looks like he's well into his 60's married to the younger and more attractive Josephine. At least they were married; apparently these two have restraining orders on each other where they cannot be "150 feet" from one another. Yet when it comes to trying to catch Samurai Jack they prove to be quite a lethal pairing; even managing to capture Jack. However; like most villains in this series, their pride and ego proves to be their downfall. If one of them hadn't been so greedy; this wouldn't have allowed Jack to rid himself of these quarreling bounty hunters. (Though he probably would've figured a way out anyway.) Josephine was voiced by the beautiful and talented Grey Griffin; then known as Grey DeLisle. And she takes that Southern accent to real extremes that really works for Josephine's character. IMO; Josie is still the most attractive female character in this series.

#8. - Demongo: Of all of Aku's minions; the one who gets the most fan love and fan service is the "Dealer of Destruction" Demongo the Soul Collector. Easily one of the most memorable opponents Jack has faced; Demongo's abilities were unique in that he ordered all the souls of thousands of warriors to do his bidding. And they were really a diverse cast of characters he had at his disposal. The five most notable were that of a titan, a knight, a tiger, a multi-armed warrior, and another samurai. Although Jack disposes of them; Demongo returns with vengeance by throwing all the skulls of his soulful prizes and releasing more diverse warriors: including a fat turtle reminiscent of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. When Demongo first appeared, his unique design of a flowing cape, lava-lamp like head and skull adorned body made him an instant favorite to the fans. So for years fans seemed to have built him up bigger than he really was. Which is why he ranks at Number 8. Demongo may look cool and has a wicked personality to boot. But his abilities suddenly become useless when Jack figures out how to get inside of him and release all the souls under his control. After that happens; Demongo is helpless. It's rather odd how Jack managed to get inside. But it ultimately proves that relying on people to fight your own battles is not always the best solution. Especially after his failure he is crushed by Aku......and then inexplicably returns for a brief cameo in Episode VI of Season 5. How he came back; we don't know.

#7. - The High Priestess: From a minion of Aku, to a worshipper of Aku. The High Priestess of the Cult of Aku is your atypical religious fanatic. Although unlike real-life fanatics, her cult actually stood within the presence of Aku and witnessed him first hand. So at the very least, they had reason to be devoted to their faith. But the Priestess's devotion to Aku is what twisted her into a monster. After drinking Aku's essence, she gave birth to seven daughter simultaneously. (Though as we've seen, that's nothing compared to how many babies the Scotsmans' wife popped out.) With these seven daughters, she raised them without compassion and without kindness. She subdued them to a brutal training regiment as well as instill into their fragile minds how "wonderful" the world was thanks to Aku. So yes; she essentially abused and lied to her own daughters in the name of her warped beliefs. The biggest test of all came when she commanded her daughters to go and "kill Samurai Jack" when they were old enough and properly trained. It is unknown howshe formed this cult or became its high priestess; but it is very obvious that it no doubt instilled a deep sense of hatred and wickedness into her heart. Voiced by Grey Griffin again; she provided the perfect voice for the High Priestess that was both calming and sinister. This was particularly true when she was very angry and fierce; going into full battle mode when she found that her last remaining daughter failed in her mission to kill Samurai Jack. In Episode eight of Season 5, she attempted to kill her last daughter (Ashi) for her failure. She made a perfect secondary antagonist for the Fifth and final season; putting her fanatical beliefs before her family.

#6. - X-9: What makes this character so gosh-darn memorable is the fact that he was the main character of his own episode with Jack being secondary. Previous episodes like "The Princess and the Bounty Hunters" as well as "The Birth of Evil Parts 1 and 2" also featured other characters as the main characters rather than Jack. And those were also very well done and excellent episodes! But what made X-9's episode stick out from all the rest was a combination of many things. First is X-9 himself. Although many people tire of these types as main characters; X-9's brooding nature and "silent gunman type" actually worked really well because he was based off a robot gangster/assassin that was previously shown in Season 1's "Jack and the Gangsters." His voice with that robotic pitch also added charm and flavor to his brooding nature. Secondly was his backstory. As a robotic assassin programmed with an "emotions chip" by a "funny scientist"; he began to feel wrong about killing those who opposed Aku. (Funny scientist is right as he resembled Dr. Clayton Forrestor from Mystery Science Theater 3000.) This led to a rather sweet relationship he had with a dog to which he affectionately refers to as "Lulu....Sweet thing." This leads to his motivation to kill Samurai Jack as Aku captures Lulu and holds her for ransom. So he's an anti-hero you side with given all his pathos. And finally, the soundtrack. The film noir jazz soundtrack to this episode is phenomenal. Soothing, reflective and just all-around well composed. This music is also X-9's taste as it is reflected by a CD he puts in at the beginning that plays it. Very reminsicent of my all-time favorite anime too: Cowboy Bebop. X-9 and this entire episode is one of the most beloved in the entire series. Barely any Top Ten Samurai Jack Episodes List excludes this from it.

#5. - Scaramouche: It was a tough call when it came to ranking the series two most memorable robotic characters. Both were dangerous assassins in their own right and both had interesting characteristics that separated them from most robots Jack sent to the scrap heap. But even though X-9's episode with the robot's complex motives and beautiful soundtrack is still among the best episodes in all of Samurai Jack; Scaramouche won out due to overwhelming personality. When comparing these two "antagonists"; it's like comparing Final Fantasy baddies Kefka and Sephiroth. While Sephiroth was the brooding soft-spoken type; Kefka was the loud boisterous type who was overly flamboyant and used colorful terminology. In a sense...X-9 was Sephiroth and Scaramouche was Kefka. And this is why Scaramouche ranks a little higher; he was just overall more animated and added a lot of dark humor to the new series. Like Kefka, he killed a lot of people just to get to one person but makes light of it talking lightly like none of these atrocities happened. He also uses a larger repetoire of arsenal than X-9; from swords, to a tuning fork that explodes with high sound waves. He even uses a flute to summon rock golems and scat-singing to cause his sword to move. Scaramouche was seemingly destroyed by Jack only to return as a hopping head in one of the series' funniest moments. Right down to when arrives to tell Aku that Jack lost his sword, to the moment he finds he was wrong and Aku instantly disposes of him Scaramouche no doubt became a fan favorite....in Season 5 anyway. Tom Kenny's Sammy Davis Jr. inspired voice fit this robot assassin perfectly. Which fittingly puts him in the number 5 position as one of my all-time favorite Samurai Jack characters....prior to listing off the next four who are considered main characters.
Oh yeah....he also gets bonus points for saying "Talking penis" in the series.
Scaramouche Yeah; I did that babe! XD

#4. - The Scotsman: This giant Scottish monstrosity is probably Jack's closest friend ever since he was catapulted into the future by Aku. Equally a master swordsman; the Scotsman stark contrast to Jack served him as one of the best protagonists of the series. While Jack is refined and usually collected; the Scotsman is rather brash and impulsive. John DiMaggio's off-kilter personality was the perfect match for him to do The Scotsman. And while Jack never means to offend anyone; The Scotsman is a master "Insult Tosser." Among his most famous insults were the ones he dished out at both Jack and Aku. That being when he first met Jack on the proposterously long bridge both men were trying to cross; and fired a barrage of slurs that finally cracked Jack's usually calm exterior. The ones he dished out at Aku were in Season 5 when now an old man (leading an infinite army of "extra thicc" daughters) he confronts the Shogun of Sorrow and lets him have it with his mouth before Aku effortlessly zaps him into ashes. And yet the creators knew it would be too upsetting to let Scotty go out this way. So he was brought back as a ghost; and thanks to his "Celtic Magic" proved just as effective dead as he was alive. Prior to this of course, he was a joy to watch in the earlier seasons. So beloved was the first episode where Jack and the Scotsman go from enemies to friends; that he returned again and took Jack back to his clan in an attempt to save his wife. Again like the X-9 episode; this one has fantastic music with very catchy Scottish tunes. To meet the Scotsman's wife is a sight to behold; but she proves to be just as awesome. Aside from decimating entire armies of "Celtic Demons"; she also births quite a few daughters that we all see in Season 5. Another reason the Scotsman deserves to be high on this list; his family is an extension of his personality and equally as fun. And once again; the Scotsman proved so popular that he returned again for one of the series' few "two parter" episodes where he finds Jack without his memory and makes an attempt to bring him back to his senses. The creators knew fans loved the Scostman; and the fans knew the creators loved him equally too. He was too good for a one-shot character and remains one of the most beloved protagonists in the series next to Jack.

#3. - Jack: And of course that brings us to Samurai Jack himself. As an almost unofficial rule of thumb; the title character and main protagonist of a top ten list usually isn't in the number 1 spot. Jack himself gets the honor of being placed at #3. This is still quite a high spot on the list; as Jack is the noble and fearless warrior that inspires thousands to rise up against evil and hope for light in a dark cruel world. Jack is the protector of innocents you root for; and you want to see him triumph every time he faces an adversary. So why isn't he number 1? Well like most main protagonists, Jack is a bit too good for his own good so to speak. All too often his eagerness to help people either gets him in more trouble or distracts him from his ultimate goal of finding a time portal back home. The biggest example of this was "Jack and the Monks" where he had the opportunity to go home as the monks held off the overwhelming stone statue horde. The monks were ready to die with honor to let Jack right the pat wrongs. But instead; Jack stayed back and helped the monks survive and missed his chance to go back. All because in that moment he was "not ready to sacrifice himself like the monks were." Even the monks looked confused by Jack's logic. We were too.
But that doesn't take away from the fact Jack is still a great main protagonist of his own series. Phil LaMar provided the perfect voice for the calm warrior who would occasionally lose his cool when faced with true evil. But for me where Jack really excelled as a more complex and beloved character was in Season 5. Before Season 5; the final episode of Season 4 had Jack caring for a lost baby while inspiring the little tyke just as Jack has inspired other children and adults. But now as Season 5 began; we find it has been fifty years since that time and Jack has apparently lost his way. We see Jack's fragility when he was forced to take his first life. Normally he slashes robots; but inadvertently he has killed innocents. Now he is on the deep end; being haunted by his past demons/failures and an ever-present entity known as "The Omen" awaiting for Jack to commit ritualistic Sennpuku for his sins. This duality of Jack shows him lamenting over his own mistakes and feeling responsible for letting Aku's evil continue. He never rests on laurels nor does he bask in the adoration of those he had saved. He seems almost unaware of the tributes those under Aku's rule have built to him. And while that is indeed noble for a warrior like Jack to not accept tribute for his deeds; it also makes him unaware of all the good he has done. Thus he is thrust into despair and almost ends his life without realizing he is still the hope people cling to in a world ruled by Aku. This is where we see Jack's darker side; and it was one of my favorite aspects of his character to explore as Season 5 delivered more than I had hoped for.
And of course....He looked so much cooler with that wicked beard.

#2. - Ashi: You never would've guessed that as much as Season 5 continued the story of Samurai Jack; it would also be about one of the "Daughters of Aku." Prior to Season 5; most of us just assumed these Aku Cult-born killers were just another obstacle Jack had to overcome. I don't think any of us expected one of them to become a main character. Nor did we expect her to become good to a point that without her; Jack would have been lost forever. As Season 5 came to a close; Ashi skyrocketed to the Number 2 spot on this list for being such an amazing character that actually carried Season 5 just as much as Jack did. Like I mentioned; without her Jack would have never regained his composure and end his quest. The era of strong female protagonists has gone full-force these past few years. And Ashi is right there among them. Let's begin with how she was raised as a living weapon. Although her brutally regimented training from her mother was harsh and cruel, it also worked to her advantage when she faced anything from a perverted shock-fetishist to an entire "Orc Army." Even when she was Jack's enemy her skill with her Karasigama and being with her equally skilled sisters was a sight to behold. Which brings us to how she went from villain to hero. Naturally being raised all her life with the lies that Aku made the world beautiful; she utterly loathed Jack at first. But when Jack spared her life after killing her six other sisters; she learned the truth and eventually became his greatest ally. She was the only one who was more open to the beauty of the world than her six other sisters. It began with admiring the simple beauty of a ladybug; to witnessing how Jack inspired the world to resist Aku's tyranny. Now she was fiercely devoted to fighting for Jack than Aku. But it then developed from simple devotion to a romantic interest as she and Jack fell in love. This leads to perhaps why she is among the most important characters in the series. Some thought this shipping was just "fan service." But it turned out that without their love; Jack never would have completed his quest. For you see Ashi isn't just a metaphorical "Daughter of Aku"; but a literal one as well. So much like in the episode where Jack was infected with the "Aku Sickness"; Ashi is likewise affected by Aku being a part of her and is once again turned against Jack. Only with Jack and Ashi's love is Ashi not only able to free herself from Aku's control; but use his powers as well...creating the time portal Jack searched for so long. This then helps Jack go in back time, defeat Aku and save the future from him. Sadly as she was a part of Aku; she and Jack were never able to marry as she disappeared from existence along with Aku.
From enemy to hero; from minor character to main character...Ashi's relevance in Season 5 grew bigger and bigger until she became the crucial element Jack needed to go back to the past. Without her (and Jack's willingness to spare her life) Jack never would've completed his journey. She was the balancing point between good and evil to decide which of the sides would win.

#1. - Aku: A hero is only as good as his villain. And just like the Joker was to Batman; Darth Vader was to Luke; and every Final Fantasy villain was to its main protagonist....Samurai Jack's villain just steals the show! Aku; the "Master of Masters", "The Shogun of Sorrow" and "The Deliverer of Darkness" is not only the best character on the show; but one of the best villains in a cartoon show period. Voiced both by the current Greg Baldwin and the past master VA Mako; Aku's exaggerated villainous voice and equally villainous tendencies made him both an object of fear and an object of humor. The balancing act between making Aku both truly evil and outright hilarious was no easy task. But Genndy and his team met that challenge and made Aku quite literally overshadow Jack in terms of personality and flamboyance. His laugh is cliche, his overly elaborate ways of trying to kill Jack only to backfire is cliche, and his love for everything evil is cliche. He is a large giant shadowy cliche of all villainous tropes. And we love him for that! Because his design also compliments his exaggerated evil so amazingly well. The large horns, Oni-inspired faced and wicked claws allowed room for both Aku to stretch his destructive power as well as his humorous side. Obviously being the lord of the world while crushing all resistance makes hi man object of hatred; being a tall shadowy demon with flaming eyebrows doesn't help your case either. But Aku does have fans. I should know...I'm dating one. ;3 :iconlove:!
And there actually is quite a bit to love about Aku. Most people love to hate him; but admire both his design and over-the-top theatrics. The greatest villains in fiction has outlandish personalities. And Aku's are outlandish to a point where it almost seems random. This is especially true in Season 5 where we first see him getting out of bed, putting on his flaming eyebrows like contact lenses, and then later talking to a psychiatrist version of himself he created. For as much as he enjoys spreading darkness; like Jack he also has vulnerabilities. It seems he and Jack were at a stalemate at this point and both were under considerable stress and depression. Actually this is another reason I ranked Ashi so high in importance...she was either going to help Aku get rid of his Samurai problem or be the ultimate problem that would lead to Aku's downfall. Suffice to say; the latter happened. How Aku reacted to this summed it up perfectly. "....Oh no..."
And that's another reason why Aku is a great villain. His reactions. They make for some of the most hilarious faces in the entire series. Among some of my favorites includes his annoyed look Unamused Aku Emoticon his happy look I have an evil idea Emote and....this SUPERIOR PAIN
The animators had a blast with Aku. They constantly comment how much fun he is to write for. Which is why for an Aku-less episode it must've been a challenge to write and keep it entertaining. But that's an another reason this show is so great. Even without Aku; the creators write some really damn good episodes.
But seriously most all episodes Aku is in; they are some of samurai Jack's best moments. Of particular notice are episodes like "Jack and the Zombies", "Jack vs Aku" and the prequel two-logy "Birth of Evil." All regarded as favorites in the series.
Itwas almost painful for Aku fans to watch him be defeated. But we all admitted it had to be done.
But regardless of his defeat; Aku left a lasting impression. He was among the biggest reasons Samurai Jack was so damn good. More than enough to earn him the number 1 spot of my favorite Samurai Jack character.
Though in all serious....I think my sweetest :iconverona7881: stills likes him more than I do. ;3

And there you have it!! I hope you all enjoyed Samurai Jack as much as I did.

A humorous twist to the finale of Samurai Jack!
Jack counted on his love shared with Ashi to finally go back into the past and defeat Aku once and for all.
But he did not count on Aku having one more ally.
Verona his shape-shifting love of his life!

For the sake of humor; I had Verona wield a mallet to bonk Jack over the head with to prevent him from delivering the final blow to Aku.

Again this is just a humorous take on the final episode; which was awesome!! It's based off my sweetest's love for Aku! ;D

Maria Renard has three incarnations throughout the Castlevania series.
Her 'Rondo of Blood' incarnation; her 'Symphony of the Night' incarnation; and her 'Judgement' incarnation.

Most people (including myself) prefer her 'Symphony of the Night' version. And seeing as how 'Symphony of the Night' is my all-time favorite game; I would naturally draw her incarnation from that game.

Well deciding to break from the norm and surprise people; I drew her perhaps less favored incarnation. Her elaborate 'magical girl' incarnation from 'Judgement.'

It's a needlessly complicated design and a bit excessive for sure. Was that high collar on her for instance necessary? Also her owl was confined within her staff. I decided to free the poor thing and let it fly by her side like it should.

She was designed obviously to be the 'Young Girl fighter' of the game. Though why they didn't use Charlotte for that I dunno. It's pretty fun drawing all the details I admit. And I gave her a classic magical girl pose no doubt reflecting the outfit; to which the genre has gotten a bit more respect these past few years.

Castlevania Judgment; you were a pretty decent title despite your quirkiness.

The four 'Fuzz Girls' are visiting snotty elite billionaire; Madame Foxtrot.
If you don't remember who she is; she came from my old TUFF fan comic 'The Most Dangerous Blame.'
Now available in full-book format right here. :3
The Most Dangerous Blame - A TUFF Puppy Fan Comic by shinragod
And for those new to my gals; my entire folder dedicated to them is right here:
shinragod.deviantart.com/galle…
I think Madame Foxtrot is right; these four girls can be pretty "nasty."

But do we really want to change them like she does? XD
Also; why are they even here? Probably forced to come there by their parents for their "unruly" behavior no doubt.

This is the first time we see Ruth's truly athletic side; just coming to a fancy rich woman's house dressed in her baseball uniform that is filthy from all the playing she's been doing this afternoon.
Valerie of course couldn't care less; wearing a shirt that glaringly declares her love for marijuana. XD
And Lola....is being Lola as Xu Chan bears the brunt of yet more of her antics. XD

It's like I should be doing a series on these girls with Chris Fuzz, Roger Halen, Mark Stephens and Brian Harper as BG characters. These gals seem more fun to work with. XD

Will I have more pages for this? I dunno; maybe. It will probably end with Lola doing or saying something stupid again. XD

I actually got new Stylus nibs over the weekend. And the first full scale picture I submitted trying them out is my entry for Charlie Nash from the Street Fighter Alpha series.
This version of Charlie I always prefer.
Franken-Charlie from Street Fighter V....well he has an interesting and cooler move set at least. ;D

I am very pleased how this turned out. I thought it would take days to complete this.

with my new nibs though; it only took about a few hours. The results with Charlie doing his Sonic Boom move turned out better than anticipated.

Enjoy! :D

Miko Kadan vs Onigohara 3 by shinragod

Miko Kadan is holding her own fairly well against Onigohara. She does not fear his jaws or claws.
Nor does she seem to fear the fact that the demon is tearing off her armor and outfit.
Well as long as she keeps her sword she should be able to survive this brutal...and soon to be embarassing....situation.

Extra touch are the kunai shrew into the demon's eye up there.
